Infinity pools have an edge that reflects an infinite horizon. This is achieved through an optical illusion. Conventional pools have walls that extend above the water surface level to contain the pool water.

In a vanishing edge pool, one or more walls end at the exact height of the optimal water level. This wall is often sloped downwards allowing water to overflow into a basin or trough that is hidden from view beneath the vanishing edge. Once gathered below, this water is then collected and pumped back into circulation in the main pool.

Nature of Invention
Although disputed, it is believed that the idea for infinity pools began in the mid-20th century in California with modernist architect John Lautner. His famous early commissioned work included a cantilevered swimming pool that directly bled into the Silver Lake Reservoir.
