Do You Need a Flat Yard to Have a Pool?
A swimming pool is a wonderful addition to any property, providing a refreshing oasis for relaxation, exercise, and entertainment. However, one common misconception is that having a flat yard is a prerequisite for building a pool. While flat yards generally mean an easier construction process, an experienced pool contractor, such as Aqua Pool & Patio, will be able to find solutions for building an inground pool on nearly any terrain. Therefore, if you’re wondering whether you need a flat yard to have a pool, the short answer is no.
Here are a few techniques we commonly use when working with sloped or uneven land:
- For yards that are gently sloped, a technique called grading can be used to fill in the land wherever needed to create a relatively flat surface upon which to build the pool.
- Retaining walls. If your yard contains a steeper incline, one option is to build retaining walls between the higher and lower points. In addition to leveling out the ground, creating a stable area for the pool, and preventing soil erosion, retaining walls can serve as eye-catching design elements that enhance the visual appeal of your pool area.
- Another possible option for steep inclines is terracing, which involves building platforms and/or steps to create a pool area that spans multiple levels. With an elegant appearance and virtually endless opportunities for customization, terracing is a practical solution that also brings a “wow” factor to any pool area.
- Vanishing edge or multi-level pools. Vanishing (or infinity) edge pools have long been popular for their striking appearance and ability to be installed at the top of a steep incline. A newer trend is the multi-level pool, which spans two or more levels and may contain vanishing edges between the tiers. Multi-level pools are often suggested for hilly properties.
Depending on the specific terrain of your property, building a pool on an uneven surface could potentially be more costly or time-consuming than it would be on a flat surface—but with several options available for accommodating different landscapes, it is most likely feasible.
