How Long Does a Gunite Pool Last?
Adding a swimming pool to your backyard is a major investment—one that you hope you’ll be able to enjoy for years to come without needing to worry about significant repairs. But as with most other home improvements, the lifespan of your pool will depend on a variety of factors, such as the material that it’s made from and how it is constructed. When comparing different types of inground pools—the most common of which are gunite, fiberglass, and vinyl—gunite is undeniably the most durable and longest lasting. When designed and built properly, gunite pools should last for 100 years or more. In contrast, fiberglass pools last for approximately 25 years, while vinyl pool liners generally must be replaced every six to twelve years.
The inherent strength of gunite pools comes from how they are constructed. The process begins with building a steel rebar foundation to provide sturdy structural support. This skeletal foundation is then sprayed with a mixture of raw materials, such as sand, cement, and gravel, using a high-velocity hose. The result is a structure that has what engineers refer to as “tensile” strength, meaning that it will flex with the earth’s movement without cracking or breaking, even when faced with extreme temperatures and other harsh conditions—including icy New England winters.
While gunite may not always be the least expensive option when building a pool, its long-lasting durability means that it will save you money over time since you shouldn’t need to make any major repairs. In addition to their long lifespans, gunite pools have a naturally beautiful appearance—at Aqua Pool & Patio, we like to refer to them as “yard art!” Since gunite pools are hand-built on location, they can also be customized to suit any size, shape, or style, and it’s easy to add a variety of custom features. For all these reasons, gunite pools are the preferred choice for many homeowners and commercial properties, including upscale hotels around the world.
