How Does an Infinity Pool Work?
The infinity pool is a heavyweight pool design that packs a strong visual punch. Known by other names including Vanishing Edge or Zero Edge, this type of pool is designed in a way that often blends the horizon line with the reflection of your pool’s surface. When situated next to a larger body of water, like a lake or an ocean, it creates a breathtaking illusion.
The design concept for an infinity pool is said to of originated in France at the palace of Versaille in the early 1400s. Popular today at luxury resorts and estates, the structure of this pool build requires several components to successfully achieve the seamless edge look.
Key Components of Construction
Infinity pools are constructed with multiple walls. Rather than just one external retaining wall as featured on regular pool builds, infinity pools have a second wall that slopes away. As water gently overflows the first wall, it is collected in a basin catchall that then pumps the “caught” water back into the pool system.
When to Consider
Depending on your property, there are a few things to consider when deciding if this style of pool is right for your home:
- View
Infinity pools can really set off a spectacular view. If your property lacks ample space or is set in an environment with a lackluster backdrop, you may do better creating a custom pool design that incorporates water features like a waterfall or grotto to create a private oasis. - Style
Depending on the architectural style of your house, an infinity pool design may contrast or enhance. In our years of experience, we’ve found that infinity pools look fantastic beside modern/urban architecture.
